About

Understanding the mechanisms behind Earth's climate variability

I am a climate dynamics researcher at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading. I work on ocean–atmosphere coupling; variability on interannual, decadal and multidecadal timescales; oceanic mixed-layer processes; and Southern Hemisphere climate dynamics.

My current work looks at what drives tropical Atlantic multidecadal variability and how it links to the extratropical Atlantic. I also study the atmospheric impacts of AMOC variability as part of the EPOC project, and contribute UKESM ocean experiments to TIPMIP for CMIP6+/CMIP7. During my PhD at IIT Kharagpur I identified a new coupled circumpolar wavenumber-4 pattern in the Southern Hemisphere ocean and atmosphere.

Tropical Atlantic multidecadal variability

I showed that mixed-layer depth and ocean–atmosphere interaction play a pivotal role in tropical Atlantic multidecadal variability. My recent work describes it as a seasonally evolving coupled phenomenon: it grows each summer and decays each winter, and this cycle repeats over decades. It is not simply a warming or cooling of the annual mean.

Southern Hemisphere wavenumber-4 pattern

A circumpolar pattern of eight loading centers, four positive and four negative, alternating with each other in the Southern Hemisphere. It is found in both subtropical and mid-latitude sea surface temperature and the atmosphere. I studied how it forms, its life cycle, its decadal variability and its effect on rainfall, using observations and SINTEX-F2 coupled-model experiments.

AMOC, model resolution & tipping points

I study the atmospheric impacts of AMOC variability and how AMOC-related climate responses change with model resolution (EPOC project). I also run UKESM ocean experiments for TIPMIP, for future CMIP6+/CMIP7 applications.

Ongoing project · TIPMIP ocean simulations

Indian Ocean & monsoon variability

I also work with collaborators and PhD students on Indian Ocean climate: a horseshoe-shaped salinity pattern, meridional dipole modes in ocean heat content, and how a weaker Hadley circulation delays the onset of the Indian summer monsoon.
